Flor (Flora - Deusa romana da primavera)

 

Segundo o Dicionário Houaiss da Língua Portuguesa, a palavra flor tem origem no latim flōs, flōris, enquanto a palavra flora provém do latim Flora «Flora, deusa das flores». Flora – é uma deusa romana, cujo nome vem de flos, “flor”, derivado do Indo-Europeu bhlo-, “brilhar, florir”.
Ao observarmos a etimologia das duas palavras, podemos concluir que flora e flor possuem afinal o mesmo radical, logo, pertencem à mesma família de palavras.

Flora, deusa da vegetação, é uma das mais antigas divindades romanas, fato perfeitamente de acordo com a importância da agricultura nessa civilização.

Mitologia Romana

Flora ensina-nos a honrar tudo o que cresce na natureza e no nosso interior. É uma deusa muito antiga para a qual Tito Tácio eregiu um altar em Roma. É a deusa que encarna toda a natureza e cujo nome se converteu na designação de todo o reino vegetal.

Em algumas povoações itálicas o mês de abril era consagrado à Flora. No dia 28 deste mês, em sua honra, se celebrava uns jogos chamados de Florália, que duravam até 3 de maio. Era tradicional a presença de cortesãs nestes cerimoniais. Durante estes festivais eram realizadas danças e ritos de fecundidade. Os romanos ornavam casas, ruas e templos com flores. Era época de muita alegria e regozijo na Roma Antiga.

Durante os festejos, jogavam-se sementes sobre a multidão para atrair a fertilidade e a abundância. Se faziam também, sacrifícios de ovelhas e os homens lhe ofertavam mel e sementes de flores.O mel era considerado um dos presentes que Flora tinha dado aos seres humanos. A abelha é um símbolo da potência feminina da natureza. Ela foi ligada, prioritariamente, a Deméter, Ártemis e Perséfone, sendo ainda representação da terra, de sua maternidade, de sua diligência modeladora, hábil e ininterrupta; por conseguinte, é a imagem da alma telúrica de Deméter na sua forma mais pura e elevada.

Roman Mythology

Flora teaches us to honor everything that grows in nature and in our interior. She is a very ancient goddess for whom Titus Tacitus erected an altar in Rome. It is the goddess who incarnates all nature and whose name has become the designation of the entire plant kingdom.
In some Italic settlements the month of April was consecrated to Flora. On the 28th of this month, in her honor, celebrated games called Floralia, which lasted until May 3. The presence of courtesans in these ceremonials was traditional. During these festivals were performed dances and rites of fecundity. The Romans decorated houses, streets and temples with flowers. It was a time of great joy and rejoicing in Ancient Rome.
During the festivities, seeds were thrown over the crowd to attract fertility and abundance. They also made sacrifices of sheep and the men offered him honey and seeds of flowers. Honey was considered one of the gifts that Flora had given to humans. The bee is a symbol of the feminine potency of nature. She was attached, as a priority, to Demeter, Artemis and Persephone, and she was still a representation of the land, of her motherhood, of her modeling, skillful and uninterrupted diligence; therefore, it is the image of the telluric soul of Demeter in its purest and highest form.
